Networking’s Hugest Fib
By Keith Woolgar
There’s certainly no doubt the fact that face-to-face business networking is among the most, or even the most valuable methods to market oneself, ones cause or ones small business. It is a fact.
Typically, networking costs less when compared with conventional marketing, and ties you individually to your business, right in front of your purchasers or would-be purchasers. Take your schedule to a function, make a follow up meeting on the spot! Hours of cold calling and target marketing; stand aside! Who wouldn’t rather meet their customers and prospective clients in an informal, familiar, non-confrontational environment like a networking event or with the help of a business networking group?
Go figure! So why else might there be a multitude of business networking breakfast meetings, business networking happy hours, speed business networking events (you name it) and even more popping up all the time?
Long gone are the days of being limited to joining chambers of commerce and other service organizations, because now you can connect with, greet and glad hand fellow business networkers anytime, seven days a week when you need to. Imagine, BNI and LeTip are networking brand names comprised of thousands of business networkers by themselves…it’s a social networking society, folks! Now, with the newer “online venues” like Facebook, networking seems to have gone viral as housewives, Realtors, cake bakers and Fortune 500 companies interact by way of the popular “social media”, which was not even a popular term merely three quick years ago. We as a society network, network, network!
The fib is that “business networking” is effective. The truth of the matter is , that attending business networking events, signing up for the groups, being on Facebook, etc. does not work at all as a stand alone action to closing sales or engaging in business. Yes, it takes much more…
Perhaps you have ever come back from the business networking event with a pocketful of business cards with no resulting leads? Like, zero? Of course, you have. Did you ever quit a business networking group due to the fact “it didn’t work”? Of course you did.
Facts are, the churn rate (current users dropping away being replaced by fresh paid members) could be up to 50% per year in a given networking organization. Half dropping out, being replaced by new, enthusiastic newbies, who will in turn drop out aftera lame attempt at making networking work for them.
