The Giuseppe Verdi Club of Rockford, IL has quite a bit of interesting historical background. 27 Italian-born Rockford men met above a North lst Street grocery store to form a social club for the purpose of continuing their friendship and companionship. The 27 men named the newly formed organization the Giuseppe Verdi society. They chose the four rooms above the grocery store at 758 North 1st Street as their clubrooms.

The organization was officially founded on September 9, 1918 under the title of the “Giuseppe Verdi Society.” The club was established in order to provide two main objectives.

l. To provide and maintain a lodge for the pleasure and recreation of its members.

2. To increase the spirit of brotherhood and good fellowship among its members.

During World War II, the club furnished free Sunday spaghetti dinners and dancing for soldiers. They were also very engaged in charitable programs for fund raising purposes to benefit such organizations as the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis and the Veterans’ Organizations.

The club has changed its clubhouse location over the course of the century. They left the grocery store location about five months after the club was chartered in 1918. They moved to their current North Madison Street location. The club had also purchased a frame house also on Madison Street. In 1930, they constructed the first part of what is now their modern spacious hall.

The first Verdi hall (Rockford Banquet Hall)was a structure 40 x 60 feet, but was remodeled in 1950 and a major addition was constructed as well.

The present building, which includes the 1930 structure, has a total of 16,200 square feet on two floors. Besides a lounge, the building features a large auditorium for private parties, modern kitchen facilities, a basement barroom, and outdoor recreational equipment.

The present building has lighted grounds overlooking the Rock River and has playground equipment for children, picnic tables, an outdoor summer pavilion, basketball courts, and boat docks.

The 90 year old Verdi Club Society has upheld the high standards set forth by their founding members to this day. Besides being a sponsor for local events such as the Festa Italiana held each year at Boylan High School, the club board committee continually keeps current members active with club picnics, golf playdays, steak dinners, bond dinners, and formal dances. It is one of the elite social clubs in Rockford today and will be for many generations in the future.

Eurasian milfoil is a soft looking flora that was once a everyday plant to find in fresh water aquariums.

All The Same, It did not stay there. Now it is believed to be an invasive species that threatens North American fresh water streams, rivers, ponds and lakes.

In its native Eurasian surroundings it is a relatively harmless flora (but still a bit of a pest) but here, out of its normal waters, it takes over and destroys ecosystems, clogs water intakes and power plants, and makes them undesirable for recreational purposes.

Several hypotheses are around that explain its foundation. One is that it hitched a ride on the ballast of a ship coming from Europe or Asia. That is a good guess. When they tested ships leaving invaded water, 25 percent carried some milfoil with it. The other main theory is it was introduced by individuals throwing away fish tank plants or packing material used to ship live worms.

The most hazardous thing about this flora is that it can adapt to live in almost every kind of aquatic habitat in North America. It can live in the cold of Washington State or the warmth of Florida. From pristine waters of the Rockies to the salty waters of the salt marshes it can thrive. To make its life better, nothing seems to like eating it.

Once established it spreads quickly in waters that range from two feet to up to 30 feet, matting just below the surface and choking out the native vegetation. Some plants like millet are given little chance to grow, which causes problems because they are a food source for many and a home for small marine animals. This tangled growth also causes problems for any mammals or birds that fish for their food. Further more, the vast mats keep the wind from properly oxygenizing the water and suffocating adult fish as well as assisting spawn algae blooms which further exacerbate the problem.

These plants are problematic to people as well. Not only does milfoil decrease water quality but the mats make shoreline bathing impossible. Milfoil impedes fish breeding, which means fewer fishermen. Milfoil is also a problem for sailors because it can become trapped on the engine, cause dangers for water skiers and block navigation hazards from the sailors view.

Residential Areas and companies are also put at a disadvantage because of this little water plant. Water intakes or over flows can get blocked leading to deficits in some areas and flooding in others. Dykes and electricity output can also be touched if the water plant mats get caught up in the dams.

Milfoil control has been difficult. By And Large poisonous substances are out of the question as they demolish the very ecosystem they were meant to save. Physically removing the flora isn’t fully successful because the parts that break off can form new plants elsewhere. For that reason the large mechanical harvesters are only used in the worst cases and then only as a first step. Milfoil has been more successfully removed by vacuum dragging, which can pick up any damaged pieces left behind. A weevil maybe the solution to the milfoil dilemma as it love to eat the water plant and is a natural way to battle the weed.

Milfoil is just one type of unwanted species that has overstayed its welcome; many other invasive aquatic plants are still thriving across the country. When plants or creatures are introduced outside their natural environment, you can’t foresee the significances.
